Details
Knee replacement surgery is a procedure that is performed when your knee joint experiences pain and discomfort, usually due to arthritis and the subsequent loss of cartilage.
Damaged cartilage that cushions your femur and tibia bones wears away over time usually due to arthritis or trauma. This loss of cartilage results in your femur and tibia bones coming into contact with each other, which can be extremely painful.
Knee replacement implants are typically made from metal alloy and polyethylene. The femur and tibia replacement components are made from metal and the polyethelylene insert, “your new cartilage,” is made from medical grade plastic.
Consensus implants are designed to restore function and provide excellent performance, allowing you to return to an active lifestyle within your surgeon’s recommendations.
What is Hip Replacement Surgery?
Every day, your hip joint propels you forward; moving you from your car, to the gym, to work, to soccer practice. The hip joint is made up of a femoral head (the ball) which moves in the socket (acetabular shell).
Over time, your bones may start grinding together instead of using cartilage as a cushion resulting in pain and discomfort requiring a replacement.
Hip replacement surgery, also called total hip arthroplasty, involves removing damaged bone and cartilage surrounding the ball and socket joint.
Consensus Orthopedics offers patients a complete line of Total Hip Systems to relieve your pain and help you restore movement.
What should I expect before and after surgery?
Whether you are considering hip or knee replacement surgery, you are not alone. There are over 550,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries performed each year. Consensus Orthopedics strongly urges each patient to consult with their primary care physician and orthopedic surgeon for proper care before, during and after surgery.
- Understand the procedure – with the help of your primary care physician and orthopedic surgeon, you should research hip and/or knee surgery for further information about these procedures.
- Assemble your personal and medical information.
- Plan ahead for post-surgery/coming home – you may need some assistance with certain activities while you recover.
- Last minute preparations – the 24 hours before your surgery can be busy; you should talk to your doctor and prepare for any last minute changes or needs.
