Embolization Device for Hemorrhagic Stroke - Medical / Health Care
A cerebral aneurysm is a weakened part of an artery in the brain that bulges and fills with blood. When it ruptures, blood spills into the surrounding brain tissue resulting in a hemorrhagic stroke.
Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide.14-16
- Each year, 30,000 people in the US suffer strokes due to cerebral aneurysms.7
- Current treatment options to occlude aneurysms can be complex, time consuming and expensive.8,9
- At follow-up, 10-50% of patients DO NOT have complete aneurysm occlusion.10
Current Treatment Options
A variety of medical devices are currently available for treatment of brain aneurysms including small coiled metal wires (coils), stents, and other metal implants. These devices reduce blood flow into aneurysms and require the formation of blood clots and scar tissue to seal the aneurysm neck completely, which can result in slow and incomplete occlusions.11-13
Artio Medical is developing neurovascular embolization products.
