In this study we found that patients with diabetes were interested in a remote two-way communication with their health care professional. This provided a foundation for designing interventions specific to a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) population.
In this paper, we used economic models to estimate the cost and quality of life benefits associated with remote monitoring of the diabetic lower extremity in Canada. We found that remote monitoring may be a viable way to improve access to care for Canadians living outside urban centres.
For the first time, this paper quantifies what clinicians have known intuitively for a long time: foot checking practices in diabetic patients are inadequate, which can lead to amputation. This publication lays the groundwork for our development of a mobile healthcare platform for diabetic foot health by establishing need.
