PRACTICAL ELEMENTS OF CHROME-PLATED DIAMOND TOOLS WITH METAL BINDER.
Metal bonded diamond tools (also known as diamond core tools) are widely used in the important grinding of hard and brittle materials due to their high strength, good formability, and being able to meet the requirements of high-speed grinding and ultra-precision grinding. Metal bonded diamond tools are usually made by sintering Fe, Co, Cu, Ni and other bonding agents with diamond. Because the covalently bonded diamond crystals have no chemical affinity with the binder and the interface is not wetted, diamond particles can only be mechanically embedded in the binder matrix.
During the working process, under the action of grinding force, the matrix metal loses its grip on the diamond, causing it to fall off on its own, seriously affecting the service life of the tool and reducing the processing efficiency. Diamond surface metallization is a general method to solve this problem at present. Its essence is to directly coat the diamond surface with metals that are easy to form carbides, such as Ti, Cr, Ni, etc. Through heating up, a uniform combined bonding layer is formed on the diamond surface. During the sintering process of diamond tool manufacturing, the metalized diamond surface layer and the metal matrix binder realize the metallurgical bonding, thus reducing the drop of diamond particles in the grinding process.
