Project - MentorEye

The project assumed the development of a new surgical navigation system for intraoperative precise identification of neoplastic lesions and their radical resection. Achievement of these goals was divided into three main parts 1. Development of new technology, 2. Preclinical in-vitro and in-vivo trials, 3. Clinical trials: development of innovative method of surgical oncological treatment.

The project focused mainly on the development and preparation for the implementation of an innovative surgical navigation system using molecular mechanisms aimed at intraoperative detection of the tumour by specific recombinant viral vectors in order to mark it in fluoroscopic mode and thus create the conditions for the complete removal of the lesion while maintaining critical organ functions such as vision and hearing. The final expected result of the project was the development of innovative, patient-specific and automated oncological surgery.

Malignant cancer is the second most common cause of death in Poland and causes 17% of cases of disability. According to GLOBOCAN 2008, the number of cancer cases worldwide was estimated at 12.7 million, leading to 7.6 million deaths. Surgical treatment remains the main method of oncological therapy, and the overall survival rate depends on adequate and precise resection of the tumour with an adequate margin of macroscopically intact surrounding tissues. Current methods of evaluating the surgical margin are based on intraoperative histopathological examination and surgeon’s experience.
