Project - SENSEAS

The idea of the project was to develop and verify a system using the latest technologies, which will enable objective assessment in the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders.

It was the first system in the world to use multimedia techniques and psychophysiological measurements (eye tracking, EDA/GSR), which help in the diagnosis of small children, giving them a chance for a normal life in the future.

Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders is a major challenge. It is difficult to establish a relationship with a very young child, whose communication problems may result from various reasons, which may lead to an incorrect diagnosis.

On the other hand, previewing and analysing the way in which the child acquaints the content transmitted by means of a specially prepared play on the monitor screen can help to objectivise the assessment of their information processing. Measuring the change in emotional engagement helps to understand increasing stress or joy that will not be expressed by facial expressions or verbal communication.

The additional use of stimulation extends the therapeutic possibilities in terms of duration and results achieved.

The main task of the project was the creation and evaluation of the SENSEAS system.

SENSEAS used 3 technologies that are commonly used by researchers, but have not yet found their place in practical everyday use.

  1. Eye tracking is a very precise and measurable method, which allows to examine how a child looks at the presented stimuli – films and cartoons developed specifically for the project. With simple games using visual interactions, the child’s behaviour and visual attention can be measured non-invasively. Also objectively and numerically, which makes it possible to compare the results, e.g. for a given child over time.
  2. Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) or Electrodermal Activity (EDA), measured using a device resembling a domino brick, allow to detect and record a change of emotional involvement. This allows a deeper understanding of the child and the elements that cause negative tension in him or her, already in the phase of growing anxiety, which does not have to be seen outside. Positive reactions can be detected and used to create a friendly atmosphere and comfortable therapy conditions.
  3. Stimulation of the brain can be compared to a warm-up before physical exercise. Stimulation of the brain in a properly prepared and carried out way, increases its plasticity and the possibility of creating new paths and neuronal connections.

The project was carried out together with the SYNAPSIS Foundation and Media Bridge.
