Standing Desk Is Value For Money
The study found that giving 20% staff a standing desk in the office would save A$84 million in health care costs.
According to Australia's first assessment of a low cost standing desk, providing a standing office desk for 20% of office staff can save $8,400 in health care costs and prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and increase the total life of 7492.
The researchers analyzed the standing desks led by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Victoria Health and the National Health and Medical Research Council. Pilot results. The pilot involved 231 office staff in Victoria.
They found that the pilot allowed the staff to reduce their sitting time by an average of one hour per day. This pilot also includes support and health training for working institutions.
In addition, those who participated in the pilot had better blood sugar and fat levels than those who did not use a low cost standing desk.
Lan Gao, an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow, said the benefits of using a low cost standing desk would offset estimation of 185 million Australian dollars that would result from the intervention.
'So far, the prohibitive cost has been considered to be a barrier to the widespread implementation of [standing desks],', Dr. Gao said.
'Therefore, our first such study in Australia shows that these interventions are value for money.'
Almost two-thirds of Australian adults are considered obese or overweight.
'In today's society, what we are looking for is a way to prevent further development of diseases such as diabetes,' said David Dunstan, professor of co-authors of the study, Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.
'If you can adjust the time people spend sitting in a day, this can reduce the risk of long-term complications such as heart disease and diabetes.', he said.
