If you’re one of the 45% of American adults who snores at least on an occasional basis, you may get teased about it.  Snoring is no joke at all and may a warning sign of an even more serious underlying condition, or sleep apnea.  If you’re a sleep apnea victim, your breathing can be interrupted for short periods of time while you sleep.  Additionally, not just the snoring individual but their bed partner suffers with passive snoring disruptions. Thus, their health and sleep is equally affected.

So how can you know if it’s sleep apnea or snoring without sleep apnea? While most of us snore occasionally, frequent or persistent snoring is often associated with obstructive sleep apnea, a condition the adversely affects nearly 30 million Americans.  Therefore, it’s important to distinguish between primary snoring and snoring caused by sleep apnea.  If left undiagnosed or untreated, OSA can have long-term effects on your health as well as your quality of life.

Primary snoring which is snoring without sleep apnea, is less dangerous than OSA but comes with its own detrimental effects on health and sleep. As per the statistics of American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 24% women and 40% men snore regularly. However, not all the individuals that snore have sleep apnea, as per the clinical study published in Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. It showed that nearly 60% of people that have primary snoring do not suffer with sleep apnea.  Mostly people that snore have reasons linked to their anatomy, weight and lifestyle.
