EWI’s History Helps Guide Our Future
In September 1992, business partners Robin Melton and Deborah Paulsen founded Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI). Against an attorney’s advice that owning a business was too risky, they moved into a two-room office in Springfield, Missouri. They began a small project for Bass Pro Shops, their very first client. They did fieldwork, consulting report writing, and office administration on their own.
After three years, the two business partners made the decision to transition the company to a sole ownership structure. Robin gained 100% ownership of EWI. To this day, EWI remains a 100% Woman-Owned Business Enterprise.
EWI has grown from two employees to a staff of over 60 professionals with three current office locations – Springfield, Kansas City, and St. Louis, Missouri. EWI quickly became an industry leader with an impressive list of clients including BNSF Railway Company, Exxon Mobile, Bass Pro Shops, Inc., the Federal Aviation Administration, Commerce Bank, Tracker Marine, Alcatel-Lucent, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Water One, and a host of other local, regional, and national companies and government organizations.
On September 15, 2012, EWI endured the great loss of our Founder, Owner,
and President, Robin Melton. Ms. Melton was a devoted company owner, community leader, and friend to many. Her high standards and values are embedded in EWI’s culture and impact all that we do.
Ms. Melton had built a strong management team, which allowed for continued operation. In accordance with her succession plan, EWI named a Board of Directors and officers were elected.
The EWI Board of Directors’ combined expertise represents decades of experience in company leadership and the proven capability to drive positive results in difficult business environments. This team is well balanced in strategy, business development and operational execution – a recipe that brings successful results to EWI, our clients, and business partners.
When It Comes to EWI’s Safety Record, We’re Proud to be Below Average
EWI is dedicated to providing a safe workplace for our employees. Our goal is to protect our most valuable asset—our people. The numbers prove just how serious EWI takes safety.
- EWI has a three-year TRIR average of 0.52, which is well below the industry standard: 5.
- Our EMR is 0.85, while the industry standard is 1.
EWI is a member of ISN, a global resource that connects corporations with safe contractor, and PICS, a renowned organization that prequalified suppliers with a safety-focus.
Maintaining an outstanding safety program takes time, dedication, and commitment. Our management team invests and is actively involved in continually growing our safety program, ensuring our workplace remains safe.
For us, safety training isn’t considered a once and done item to check off a list. EWI’s entire team undergoes routine safety training, and our program far exceeds OSHA training requirements.
Safety in the field
We prioritize safe work practices on all our projects and across all facets of the company. EWI’s field policies are designed to prevent injuries and accidents, as well as meet any local, state and federal environmental and occupational health and safety laws.
