Coronaviruses belong to a large family of potentially harmful RNA viruses. In humans, they are known to be involved mainly in respiratory infections ranging from the common colds to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The recently discovered coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causes coronavirus disease COVID-19, a significant global health problem. Rapid identification of infected individuals helps limit the spread of the virus and improves the treatment of the patients. The standard method of COVID-19 diagnosis is the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from nasal, nasopharyngeal swabs or from the sputum sample.

Detection of COVID-19 IgM antibodies indicates a recent exposure to COVID-19, whereas detection of COVID-19 IgG antibodies indicates a later stage of the infection.
