Neuros Medical, a bioelectric medical technology company headquartered in Aliso Viejo, CA and with offices in Cleveland, Ohio, developed the Altius System for the critical purpose of alleviating chronic post-amputation pain and restoring quality of life. Kevin Kilgore PhD and Niloy Bhadra MD PhD from Case Western Reserve University researched and patented a reversible motor nerve block in the mid-2000s. Neuros Medical, Inc. translated these research findings into the Company’s patented platform technology, On-Demand Bioelectric Nerve Block, for sensory nerve applications. In the early-2010s, Neuros designed and developed the Altius System for the potential treatment of chronic post-amputation pain.

Neuros Medical’s technology, created by Drs. Kevin Kilgore and Niloy Bhadra of Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and MetroHealth Medical Center, and developed through funding from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, delivers a high-frequency electrical signal to sensory nerves in the peripheral nervous system to block the pain signal. The system consists of an electrode (also known as a lead) placed around a peripheral nerve and an implantable pulse generator (IPG).
Chronic pain is characterized as pain lasting more than 3 months in duration. Post-amputation pain includes phantom limb, residual limb and neuroma pain impacting nearly one million Americans. There are nearly two million amputees in the U.S. with 185,000 new amputations occurring every year.
Target the source of post-amputation pain
At Neuros, our goal is to help amputees with chronic phantom and residual limb pain find relief, decrease pain-induced opioid dependency, improve mental health and restore quality-of-life. We are at work on a novel technology to help make this ambition a reality.
The Altius® system incorporates Neuros’ patented platform technology, On-Demand Bioelectric Nerve Block, which patients initiate as needed for targeted pain relief.
