About Us
Vision
Nisus’ mission is to provide homeowners, Pest Management Professionals (PMPs), and distributors with strong, effective products that kill unwanted pests while providing the lowest possible impact to the environment.
Company History
The company originally had its beginnings in 1987, when Bud Dietrich invented a product called Bora-Care as a wood preservative for log homes. Soon thereafter, entomologists began contacting Dietrich informing him that Bora-Care was proving to be toxic to a wide variety of wood destroying insects, including termites. In 1989, Dietrich moved Bora-Care into the pest management industry, targeting Pest Management Professionals (PMPs) specializing in pest control.
Nisus Corporation was founded in 1990 in Knoxville, TN. Since then, Nisus has grown rapidly and is one of the leading suppliers of products to the professional pest management industry. Nisus is a privately held company producing a full line of pest management products, including wood protection, insect baits and odor control at its manufacturing plant in Rockford, TN.
The company’s success in this venture was the catalyst for the development and subsequent introduction of Niban Granular Bait in 1993. Niban and its spin-off product, Niban-FG, offers PMPs environmentally-friendly and weather-resistant baits for cockroaches, ants and crickets. That same year, Jecta Diffusible Boracide and BAC-AZAP Biologic Odor Control products were also introduced to the industry.
Nisus completed a very busy 1999 when the company acquired the borate product, Tim-bor, from U.S. Borax. The acquisition positioned Nisus as the world’s leader in borate technology.
One product that is gaining widespread use in the environmentally conscious pest management industry, and the first product produced by Nisus, is Bora-Care. Bora-Care utilizes a patented process that makes use of penetrants and glycols to provide long-term protection, control of termites and other wood destroying insects and fungi.
There was a major breakthrough for Nisus products in January of 1999 when the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) changed its 99A form to allow wood pretreatment with Bora-Care as a primary tool against termites in new home construction. The change in HUD policy was precipitated by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) on behalf of its members. In the past, HUD listed only soil treatments as a method of pretreating, thus preventing mortgage lenders, builders and homeowners from taking advantage of EPA-registered wood treatments made with borates. Now, Bora-Care can be used to protect your home from the beginning and is a much Greener alternative.
In October, 2001 the National Evaluation Service Committee found that Bora-Care complied with or is a suitable alternative to the soil pretreatments requirements specified in the 2000 International Building Code with the 2001 Supplement, the 2000 International Residential Code with the 2001 Supplement, the BOCA National Building Code/1999, the 1999 Standard Building Code, the 1997 Uniform Building Code™, and the 1998 International One-and Two-Family Dwelling Code. IRC 2006 International Residential Code – Decay & Termites
The use of a Bora-Care new construction treatment satisfies the following 2006 International Residential Code:
- R319.1 Protection Against Decay
- R319.1.1 Field Treatment of End Cuts
- R320.1 Subterranean Termite Control Methods
- R320.1.2 Field Treatment of End-Cuts
In 2007 Nisus Corporation, in conjunction with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), hosted the first Green Conference for the US pest control industry. The event, held in Denver, Colorado, was the largest non-convention meeting in the history of the NPMA.
Today Nisus Corporation continues to lead the Green Pest Management (GPM) movement from its headquarters in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains just outside Rockford, Tennessee. Nisus has experienced rapid growth since its beginning in 1990 and is poised to continue its leadership role in Green Pest Control Solutions as Nisus expands into world markets.
The Borate Story
Borates have long been used as a safer alternative to highly volatile, synthetic chemical pesticides. The pesticide qualities of borates have been used for at least 300 years. To stop decay or insects, builders and homeowners can apply borates to existing wood. Borates go directly on the wood and not into the soil. Borates kill termites and other wood-eating insects by poisoning the microogranisms in the insects’ digestive tracts that are needed to break down the wood’s cellulose. In other words, the termites starve to death.
Borates are also used to control ants, cockroaches, crickets and silverfish. Borates are used as a liquid spray, in granular baits and as a contact dust. Scientists believe insects die when borates enter their digestive tracts after consuming bait or grooming themselves. The borates kill the micoorganisms in the insects’ gut. So far, insects have shown no ability to develop resistance to borates.
Borates are being used more and more in the conservation of wooden structures and artifacts. The chemical diffuses deep into wood fibers to stop wood decay fungi. They are used in restoration projects from old homes to old ships. If you are concerned about exposure to toxic chemicals for your family and the environment, request that your pest control company use Nisus products in your home.
