History
In 1963, Larrick and John Glendening, along with the help of Stew Farr, formed Microlife Technics, the predecessor company to Osprey Biotechnics. Microlife Technics was the leader in its field for the development and production of direct vat starter cultures to the food industry. Their cultures were used by international food companies in the production of yogurt, cottage cheese, sourdough bread, pepperoni, wine, and other food products. Microlife established exacting quality control and activity standards, as might be expected, since their products were used in the food we eat. Microlife also had an environmental culture division, which produced cultures for waste treatment, animal, and plant health. In the late 1980's Microlife was sold, but Glendening reacquired the environmental culture division.
The environmental culture division began operating as Osprey Biotechnics in 1990. The company proceeded with the production of state-of-the-art microbial products for waste treatment, crop protection, animal and plant health applications, environmental restoration and pollution prevention.
Osprey Biotechnics began by offering products for industrial/municipal wastewater treatment. Since then, Osprey Biotechnics expanded into contract fermentation and toll manufacturing of Bacillus and Pseudomonas cultures for a variety of applications, such as animal probiotics, agricultural bio-pesticides and consumer products. These include bacterial concentrates and ready-to-use formulations under private label. Osprey's strength is in the production and stabilization of Pseudomonas and Bacillus cultures. All cultures and bio-products are manufactured to exacting specifications exceeding industry standards.
Official EPA Partnership
Osprey Biotechnics has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in developing many of its products under the U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program, formerly known as the Design for the Environment (DfE) program.
The U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program parallels worldwide interest in environmental safety and sustainability. The program’s purpose is to help identify and develop environmentally safer products.
Once a product passes the specifications of the EPA, the manufacturer is allowed to display the U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice logo on their product. According to the EPA, this logo “allows customers to quickly identify and choose products that can help protect the environment and are safer for families.”
In order to pass U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program requirements, a product must undergo a rigorous assessment by third party profilers and the EPA. This assessment carefully screens each ingredient in the product for any potential human health and environmental effect. The review covers not only the ingredient, but also its chemical structure, to see how it could impact the environment and people.
Only products that are made of the safest possible ingredients are eligible for approval. According to the EPA, “Only products that meet the Safer Choice Standard, which includes stringent human health and environmental criteria, area allowed to carry the Safer Choice label.”
Since 2003, Osprey’s products have had Safer Choice recognition. Osprey Biotechnics has products recognized by the U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program in the following classes: Boat Bilge Maintenance, Bioremediator, Drain Maintainer, Grease Trap/Lift Station Maintainer, Holding Tank Treatment/Deodorizer, Septic System Treatment, Vehicle/Parts Washer Additive and Wastewater Innoculant. Under certain requirements, Osprey’s Safer Choice recognized products are available for private label programs.
The U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program recognition does not constitute endorsement of this product. The Safer Choice logo signifies that the formula for this product, as Osprey Biotechnics has represented it to the EPA and the NSF, a third-party profiler, contains ingredients with more positive health and environmental characteristics than conventional products. The U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice Program relies solely on Osprey Biotechnics, its integrity and good faith, for information on the composition, ingredients, and attributes of this product.
'EPA/Safer Choice has not independently identified, that is, via chemical analysis, the ingredients in the product formula, nor evaluated any of Osprey Biotechnics Inc. non-ingredient claims. EPA/Safer Choice provides its evaluation only as to the product's human health and environmental chqaracteristics, as specified in the Standard and based on currently available information and scientific understanding.'
Osprey`s Expertise
Osprey Biotechnics is a leader in the field of industrial microbiology, specializing in large-scale fermentation of microorganisms, particularly those belonging to the Pseudomonasand Bacillus genera. The resulting use of cultures produced by these fermentations can be categorized the following three ways:
Osprey Cultures/Osprey Products...
Osprey maintains a vast culture collection consisting of numerous proprietary and patented strains of Pseudomonas and Bacillus. These cultures have been isolated naturally from the environment and physiologically characterized to determine their unique capabilities. Over the years Osprey's scientists have deciphered optimal parameters and formulations for growth and stabilization of these strains. Once produced and approved for use by our quality control lab, these cultures are formulated as the active components in our versatile product line. At the forefront of this line is the Munox ® series of products, which touts proficient breakdown of organic compounds ranging from simple fats and oils to recalcitrant aromatic hydrocarbons. Osprey's sales and technical support staff work closely with our customers to determine the appropriate product and inoculation parameters for each application.
Osprey Cultures/Customer Products
Osprey offers many of its own strains to its customers as concentrated liquids and powders which can be used as active components for formulation in Ready-To-Use (RTU) products. Applications for these RTU products may include eco-friendly cleaning agents and environmental bioremediation products, among others. Osprey is dedicated to assisting its customers in formulation and quality conformation of products consisting of our beneficial microorganisms.
Customer Cultures/Customer Products
A number of our customers rely on Osprey to manufacture their own proprietary strains. Under these arrangements all information and technology provided to Osprey by the customer, including the strain itself and fermentation and stabilization procedures, are held in complete confidence and exclusivity. In circumstances where these procedures are unknown by the customer, Osprey will assist in strain optimization and scale-up. Osprey has created a specialized team consisting of microbiologists, engineers, and fermentation technicians who oversee the scale-up process of our customer's proprietary microbial strains.
