Published research in the field of infection control1 has demonstrated that hand hygiene sinks, including those in heavily trafficked/public areas can become contaminated if not regularly and thoroughly disinfected. Contaminated hand hygiene sinks and other sinks within the health care environment have been associated with outbreaks, including outbreaks of antibiotic resistant organisms. Once sink drains become contaminated, decontamination can be difficult, likely due to the presence of biofilm which is resistant to manual, standard cleaning methods.
