He reported different light-scattering processes araised when photons of light interact with molecules in material. Light scattering is a two-photon process, where one photon is absorbed and another photon is emitted simultaneously. When photons emitted with the same frequency as the incident photon, it is the Rayleigh scattering.(Next page, Fig. 1 ). When photons occasionally lose or gain energy due to molecular interactions and are therefore frequency shifted (Fig. 1). Raman Scattering composed of Stokes Raman scattering, whereby the photon is scattered at lower energy (shifted wavelength towards the red end of the spectrum) and anti-Stokes Raman scattering where a small number of molecules will be in a higher vibrational level, and hence the scattered photon can actually be scattered at a higher energy level (a gain in energy and a shift to higher energy and a blue shifted wavelength).
