Xylazine (XYL) is a non-opioid veterinary tranquilizer, not approved for human use, that is commonly used in veterinary medicine as a sedative and analgesic to calm and restrain animals, particularly horses. However, studies show that people exposed to xylazine often knowingly or unknowingly ingest it in combination with other drugs, particularly illicit fentanyl, which increases the risk of suffering a fatal drug poisoning.
