AWWA officers to sort medical supplies for Project C.U.R.E.
DENVER – Officers and executives from the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the authoritative resource on safe water, will show their support for global public health on Friday by sorting medical supplies for hospitals and clinics in developing nations at a Project C.U.R.E. warehouse in the greater Denver area.
The officers, from throughout North America, will serve from 9 a.m. to noon at Project C.U.R.E.’s Denver Sorting Center, 7075 S. Alton Way, Centennial, CO 80112.
“The fantastic work done by Project C.U.R.E. is perfectly aligned with our own mission as water professionals,” said AWWA President Andy Richardson, principal and director of the Phoenix and Las Vegas offices of the consulting firm Greeley and Hansen. “We too, at our core, are protectors of public health.
“Thousands of people die each day due to waterborne diseases in Third World countries,” he added. “The supplies and equipment Project C.U.R.E. delivers make an enormous difference. The hours we spend sorting supplies will be a poignant reminder of the critical importance of safe water here and abroad.
“Project C.U.R.E.’s mission to ‘deliver health and hope to the world’ really complements the work of AWWA’s sister organization, Water For People,” Richardson said. “Water For People provides hygiene education and sanitation programs that prevent waterborne disease, and Project C.U.R.E. delivers the donated supplies and equipment that will help cure those affected by waterborne disease and other sicknesses.”
The AWWA officers and executives will sort and inventory medical supplies that have been donated by various medical manufacturers, distributors, hospitals and clinics. The vast majorities of these items are new, surplus and overstock supplies that are the result of renovation, replacement, re-orders or retirement. The group will spend the day sorting the items among 150 categories — from suture and syringes to suction tubing and surgery packs. The supplies will later be loaded onto huge semi-truck sized ocean-going cargo containers and delivered directly to hospitals, clinics and orphanages in developing countries from Central Asia to South America, from Africa to the Far East, and from Eastern Europe to the Caribbean.
“We are delighted that AWWA officers have chosen us as a volunteer service project,” said Dr. Douglas Jackson, President/CEO of Project C.U.R.E. “Clean water and hygiene are imperative to help solve many of the major global health problems of our day. When we perform our Needs Assessment studies in hospitals and clinics around the world, we see thousands of beds occupied by people who have become ill due to waterborne diseases.”
“AWWA recognizes that our work is attacking the same health problems from another angle,” added Jackson. “They are willing to donate the time and energy to put their words into action and to help us change the world—one day, one hospital, one patient at time.”
