Exposure Risks Associated with Isocyanates & Occupational Asthma Discussed in New Video

Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of their latest educational video. Their newest production discusses exposure risks and occupational asthma due to a family of chemicals known as isocyanates.

Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can sensitize workers exposed to these chemicals, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that isocyanates are one of the most common chemical causes of work-related asthma.

“Isocyanates include compounds classified as potential human carcinogens and known to cause cancer in animals,” said Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network. “Preventing exposure is important as is recognizing early sensitization in workers exposed to these chemicals.
