GPT Waste’s Head of Business Development completes the Windemere Triathlon
On Sunday, 3rd July, Mike Callaghan – Head of Business Development at GPT Waste Management Ltd completed the Windermere Triathlon in a bid to raise funds for The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity.
The Windermere Triathlon is in no way for the faint hearted. It is a challenge only undertaken by those strong enough, and brave enough to believe they can reach the finish line.
Starting with a 1.5 km open water swim, he took to the lake like a duck to water, completing this and moving swiftly on to a 43km bike ride. After completing the bike ride, he then opted for more suitable attire by stepping into his running shoes and completing the final stage – a 10k run.
Mike had never completed a Triathlon before. His determination enabled him to make it to end. Mike completed the Triathlon in aid of ‘SuperJosh’. As a friend of The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity, he saw this as an opportunity to raise awareness of this special charity and also to raise money for a great cause. The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity relies on the support of local people. Joshua was 3 ½ when he was diagnosed with a brain stem tumour. Life-saving surgery was needed to remove the tumour left Josh with serious post-operative complications.
On Josh’s 13th Birthday in 2013, Josh’s mum, Dawn, launched the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity with the aim of helping other families living with childhood brain tumours and post-operative complications.
Josh sadly passed away in August 2014.
When Mike came across the opportunity of the event, he simply could not pass it by. Having never taken part in anything of this scale before – it was a little daunting at first.
An Olympic Distance Triathlon is exceptionally challenging both mentally and physically. Mike hoped that his friends, family and colleagues would see this and give generously to this very important cause that he had chosen to support.
Mike said
“The reason I am doing this is that I’ve been friends with one of The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity’s trustees for about 10 years, and I have heard so many wonderful things about what Josh, and the charity in general, has achieved in a short space of time. I just knew I had to be involved, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Everyone involved with the charity works so hard, I just feel like a little tiny grain of sand in comparison, but I am delighted to be able to contribute and hopefully make a slight difference somewhere along the way.”
Dawn, Josh’s Mum and the charity co-founder was overjoyed with Mike’s commitment and hard work. She said:
“What Mike is doing is amazing, and a little bonkers, but he has such enthusiasm I know he’ll do just fine. The money he has raised so far is enough to cover one of our hospital grants, so will make a huge difference to a family whose child is in hospital receiving treatment.”
Mike has raised an amazing £865.00 so far (almost £1000 with Gift Aid). The charity solely relies on public donations and without these would not be able to operate. We are extremely proud of what Mike has achieved, not only for himself but also for such a great cause.
