New BLS Reports on Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Deaths in Puerto Rico
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries that covers 2023. Tragically, there were 5,283 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States that year. The good news is that is a 3.7% decrease from the 5,486 in 2022.
Key findings from the 2023 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:
A worker died every 99 minutes from a work-related injury in 2023 compared to every 96 minutes in 2022.
The fatal work injury rate was 3.5 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, down from 3.7 per 100,000 FTE in 2022.
In Puerto Rico, there were 23 fatal injuries, up from 18 in 2022 and 19 in 2021.
“BLS also recently published its latest account of employer-reported workplace injuries and illnesses for 2023,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Fortunately, there has been a decrease in injuries and illnesses across the entire nation. Private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, down 8.4% from 2022.”
