Occupational Asthma and Identifying Respiratory Irritants, Allergens and Asthma Triggers
CTSI provides industrial hygiene and indoor environmental quality services to protect workers and building occupants from airborne pollutants known to cause respiratory conditions.
New York, NY, April 20th, 2022 -- The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) reports that in at least one out of every six asthmatics, their condition is caused or made worse by workplace exposures. Occupational asthma, also referred to as work-related asthma, can dramatically impact a person’s quality of life, reduce productivity, and increase costs.
The condition is one of the most common occupational lung diseases in the United States. Occupational asthma is triggered by an exposure on the job and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) states that there are over 300 known, or suspected, substances in the workplace that can cause or worsen asthma.
Typical asthma symptoms may include:
· Episodes of wheezing,
· Chest tightness,
· Shortness of breath, and
· Coughing.
“While there is no cure for asthma, occupational asthma can be controlled with medical care and by avoiding exposure to asthma triggers,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “In many cases, if occupational asthma is not identified and managed early on, it gets worse over time. At CTSI, our industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety professionals offer testing and monitoring services to identify a wide range of chemical and biological substances that act as respiratory irritants, allergens, and asthma triggers. This information, along with CTSI employee training, personal protective equipment recommendations, and possible modifications to engineering controls and work practices, can then be used to prevent or mitigate exposure risks to these substances. CTSI is pleased to offer these services in Florida and the New York metropolitan area to commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. ”
