Quebec University in Laval, Canada. This is the first tricuspid valve replacement in Canada

Feb. 7, 2018

The Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec–Université Laval (the Institute) recently successfully performed a first case of percutaneous tricuspid replacement. So far, only 10 patients worldwide have undergone this type of percutaneous replacement. The procedure was performed by Dr. François Dagenais, cardiac surgeon and head of the Cardiac Surgery Service and by Dr. Josep Rodés-Cabau, hemodynamicist and researcher at the Research Center.

Tricuspid insufficiency is a common disease in patients with heart valve damage. In the presence of significant tricuspid leakage, the probability of mortality increases if it is not corrected. However, isolated tricuspid valve surgery remains infrequent but is associated with operative morbidity and mortality. The vast majority of patients with severe tricuspid leak therefore remain medically treated or are referred for surgery at a late stage with right ventricular dilation and dysfunction. During the last years,

The NaviGate bioprosthesis (NaviGate Cardiac Structures Inc., Laguna Hills, CA, USA) is the only available device that has been used to completely replace the native tricuspid valve in humans. The first case of percutaneous tricuspid replacement in Canada was performed at the Institute on February 2 in a 79-year-old patient with severe symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation at high surgical risk. The procedure went well with no immediate complications, with an excellent end result. The patient is currently continuing his convalescence with a satisfactory evolution, and will be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.
