Synaptive’s Modus X Takes Center Stage in the latest issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery’s Neurosurgical Focus on exoscopes in neurosurgery
January’s Journal of Neurosurgery (JNS) published a series of 17 videos that examine the application of exoscopic visualization in cerebrovascular, neuro-oncologic, pediatric, peripheral nerve, and spinal neurosurgery. The video series highlights the exoscope as a versatile alternative to traditional optical microcopy.
Seven of the videos highlight the use of Synaptive’s robotic exoscope, Modus X. Surgeons from Johns Hopkins conclude that “The exoscope offers a larger field of view, greater depth of field, greater illumination and magnification capabilities as compared to traditional optical microscopy” and that “the 3D exoscope system lends itself well to applications within spinal neurosurgery” (Khalifeh et al.). In the case of an aneurysm clipping performed by Arzumanov et al., from Allegheny General Hospital, the authors conclude that “the surgeon is able to visualize the anatomy to perform the surgery safely and effectively while maintaining good ergonomics.”

These publications demonstrate the benefits of exoscopes, and Synaptive’s Modus X, in delivering better visualization as a result of increased magnification and 4K-3D optics. Furthermore, exoscopes have been shown to increase the ability to perform MIS procedures, reduce pain and fatigue for surgeons, reduce blood loss during procedures, and reduce OR time when compared to operative microscopes (Nawabi et al., 2023).
