Understanding the Connection between Hay Fever and Snoring
As we move towards the New Year, we’ll be anxiously awaiting the warming days of springtime. Well, most of us will anyway. Fortunately for many of us, and unfortunately for many others, it means flowers will be in bloom after spring rains and some of us will be suffering with seasonal allergic rhinitis, more commonly referred to as hay fever. It’s all about the coughing, the red eyes, and the sneezing from that point on. For those that are allergic to pollen and other seasonal allergens, it can be a difficult time to tide over without histamines and anti-snoring remedies.
However, don’t lose hope because there is a connection. Snoring is one of the key signs of not just allergies but a variety of ailments including sleep apnea and cardiac issues if it goes undiagnosed. For those unlucky individuals, who suffer with chronic snoring and other sleep-related disorders, their suffering is exacerbated by the many allergens floating through the air, at this time. But there are effective ways to control the symptoms of hay fever and stop snoring every night.
Hay fever is defined as a seasonal allergic reaction to pollen, the powdery substance that plants release during their reproductive cycle. Pollen contains certain proteins that can cause the following symptoms:
coughing and sneezing
earaches
feeling fatigued or tired
headaches
itchy ears, mouth, nose, and throat
itchy, red, or watery eyes
loss of smell
pain around the forehead and temples
runny or stuffy nose
We usually witness the worst hay fever episodes between late March and September when the pollen count peaks. Furthermore, the weather plays a significant role in the extent to which individuals suffer with allergies. For example, hot, humid, and windy conditions tend to worsen a person’s symptoms. Thus, if you are living in a city that enhances your symptoms, it is important to take precautions before the weather changes.
Allergic rhinitis is quite common, and more often than not, it contributes to a person’s snoring which can result in poor sleep quality. Additionally, research has shown that individuals with severe cases of allergic rhinitis are more prone to developing sleeping disorders, including chronic or frequent snoring and sleep apnea. Currently, there are two types of hay fever to be aware of:
Seasonal allergic rhinitis –
This type of allergy can cause sufferers to snore and is brought on in spring as well as the summer and fall months when pollen and mold spore counts are higher than what they typically are during the cold weather.
Perennial allergic rhinitis –
Although pollen is a primary cause of allergies, it can also be caused by a variety of other factors including animal dander, dust mites, and mold spores. When you suffer with allergies throughout the year, this is commonly referred to as perennial allergic rhinitis.
Despite their unpleasantness, these types of allergies aren’t harmful and can be treated. By taking steps to control your allergies, you can maintain a better quality of life and in some cases eliminate or at least limit your snoring episodes. Anti-allergic medication and histamines are usually recommended by healthcare professionals.
While allergy sufferers are all too familiar with the regular disruption caused by hay fever, it can also exacerbate a person’s snoring, especially those who are prone to snoring due to nasal congestion. Allergies cause swelling in the nasal tissues, thereby blocking the airways and restricting airflow. This forces your airflow to move faster and dehydrate the surrounding tissues. As a result, you may start breathing through your mouth which eventually leads to snoring.
Fortunately, there are certain steps you can take to prevent hay fever attacks and minimize your snoring.
These include:
instead of hanging your laundry outdoors to dry, dry it indoors away from windows
relieve your allergy symptoms with antihistamines
take a shower before bedtime to get rid of any pollen on your body or in your hair
use an air purifier to create an indoor pollen-free environment
wash bedding and pillowcases more often, especially when the pollen count is considerably higher than other times of the year
In addition to the above, using a product such as Asonor Anti-snoring Spray Solution to open up your airways can provide considerable relief and help you keep your snoring to a minimum. The product can be safely used every night which means you’ll be able to breathe a lot easier as you sleep. You only have to put in 3-4 drops by tilting your head and feel the liquid go down your throat as that will tighten the tissues in the nasal passage.
Habitual snoring, whether caused by hay fever or other factors can be more than an annoyance or nuisance. Aside from disrupting your sleep, it disrupts your partner’s sleep as well. If your snoring is associated with obstructive sleep apnea or OSA, you could be at risk for numerous complications and side effects of snoring including:
daytime sleepiness
difficulty concentrating
elevated risk of behavior problems in children with OSA
elevated risk of heart conditions, hypertension, and stroke
elevated risk of motor vehicle accidents due to daytime sleepiness
frequent anger or frustration
