The piston aerosol is fast, quiet and small in size. It consists of an air compressor, an ampoule, a mouthpiece and a mask through which the liquid drug, transformed into very fine vapor, is administered to the patient. The compressor generates an air flow that is able to suck up the dose of water and medication which are in turn fragmented into very small particles and transported into the mouthpiece, into the mask and then into the lungs.
Aerosol therapy is one of the most frequent in centers specializing in diseases and infections of the respiratory tract. But if you are dealing with phlegm, cough or sinusitis, the piston aerosol is an economical and practical solution that allows you to treat yourself at home. This device nebulizes medications prescribed by the doctor to treat diseases such as asthma, cough and other inflammations of the bronchi. The aerosol is particularly suitable for smaller patients who, not having the same breathing intensity as adults, can react much better to this type of treatment.
Nebulization is essential because it allows the drug to reach deep into the lungs, from the bronchi to the alveoli. The finer the particles, the better. This is the only characteristic that differentiates the various aerosols from a qualitative point of view.
But be careful: the nebulization must not even be too strong because if the particles are too small they are expelled with the exhalation and the healing effect is too light. The average of the piston aerosols on the market is between 0.5 and 5 microns (the unit of measurement of particles). The best aerosols settle around 2 microns .
