Bacticent - Antimicrobial Coating
From Coating Solutions
Bacticent Antimicrobial Coating provides a broad spectrum of efficacy with a well-characterized drug, making it a major differentiator for your medical device. The heat-cured co-polymer matrix provides controlled delivery of chlorhexidine diacetate right from the surface of the device and directly to the tissue most susceptible to infection. Elution times can be engineered to schedule infection-fighting compound delivery per the specific needs of your application—from as short as a few hours to over 60 days. Adaptable for a variety of antimicrobial drugs, compatible with most relevant device substrates and custom tailored to meet or exceed your required elution and drug-effectiveness timelines, Bacticent is an ideal choice for indwelling catheters, central venous catheters, dialysis catheters and other devices designed to combat gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria.

Products Details
Methodology:
Titanium substrates were coated with a Bacticent AM130 Antimicrobial Chlorhexidine Acetate Coating and were incubated in 10 mM phosphate buffered saline at 37°C with gentle agitation (~30-50 RPM). The buffer was exchanged at the intervals seen in the corresponding graph, and the elution solutions were analyzed by HPLC for chlorhexidine concentration.
Analysis:
The Bacticent AM130 Antimicrobial Coating exhibited sustained elution of chlorhexidine sufficient to be effective against a variety of microbes (eg. S. Aureus, E. Coli, E. Faecalis) over a period of 14 days as indicated by the MIC line for S. Aureus.

Benefits
At any given time, the CDC estimates that one in of every twenty-five hospitalized patients is affected by a Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI), and that preventing these infections could save an estimated $30 billion in medical costs, as well as the discomfort, loss of time and income, and shortened lifespan of countless patients. One of the most effective ways to combat HAIs is with antimicrobial coating applications, but matching a device to a surface treatment that’s optimized for its substrate and the best anti-infective compound can be a daunting process for your in-house team.
Tailored Performance ProcessPartnering with Harland involves a stage-gated process tailored specifically to the requirements of your device application. We’ll work with you to understand the infection-reduction and elution-profile demands of your device, and then develop a Bacticent program customized to those needs. Bacticent’s flexible development process allows Harland to engineer an antimicrobial delivery system compatible with most relevant device substrates and capable of utilizing a variety of antimicrobial compounds like chlorhexidine or rifampin. A customized Bacticent program results in a more effective device application—one that may ultimately save lives.
Combine with LubricityFor increased patient comfort and additional bacteria adhesion resistance, Bacticent may be combined with a lubricious layer such as Harland’s Lubricent hydrophilic coating.
