BioFire FilmArray - Model PN - Pneumonia Panel
From Panels
Pneumonia patients are frequently over-treated with antibiotics because it is difficult to quickly identify the pathogen responsible for their symptoms. The BioFire Pneumonia Panel delivers fast, accurate pathogen identification in about one hour, which may allow physicians to put patients on appropriate therapy quicker.

Products Details
The BioFire Pneumonia Panel identifies 33 clinically relevant targets from sputum (including endotracheal aspirate) and bronchoalveolar lavage (including mini-BAL) samples. For 15 of the bacteria, the BioFire Pneumonia Panel provides semi-quantitative results, which may help determine whether an organism is a colonizer or a pathogen.

The BioFire Pneumonia Panel reports levels of organism concentration in genome copies/mL. Values are calculated based on an internal Quantified Standard Material (QSM) that is present in the pouch at a known concentration. The difference between real-time amplification of the QSM and the amplification of a target is used to extrapolate a copies/mL concentration for the target. Values calculated below 10^3.5 copies/mL are reported as “not detected.”
The BioFire Pneumonia Panel detects more pathogens than culture. It is difficult to grow organisms in culture if they are fastidious or if a patient is on antibiotics when a sample is collected. The BioFire Pneumonia Panel identifies nucleic acid even when the organism will not grow in culture. In the clinical study for the BioFire Pneumonia Panel, the panel identified a bacteria in an additional 22% of BAL and 27% of sputum specimens.1
