Boss -Brillouin Optical Scanner System
Biomechanical imaging with the Brillouin Optical Scanner System, or BOSS, will address a large range of ophthalmic indications. BOSS is a non-contact, confocal, high-resolution optical scanning platform targeted at identifying the biomechanical properties of eye tissues such as the cornea or lens, to build a spatially resolved profile of tissue stiffness in vivo.
BOSS works by using light energy to measure reverberations through a depth of eye tissue. To determine tissue biomechanics, or elasticity, the system performs a spectral analysis of scattered laser light.
As an example, in the cornea, multiple light pulses are applied to parcels of tissue that are each approximately 5 microns in depth.
Each pulse probes deeper and deeper into the tissue.
The axial measurements are averaged to determine the overall local stiffness of the tissue, with stiffer areas appearing as cool colors and more-flexible areas appearing as warmer colors.
Adjoining parcels are averaged together to form an elasticity map in units of longitudinal elastic modulus, or LEM, that can visually identify previously undetected corneal abnormalities or areas of weakening.
By uniquely capturing data through a depth of tissue, and using the proven Brillouin principle, BOSS provides reliable and consistent biomechanical information, enabling surgeons to have more confidence in their treatment decisions.
