Hygieia - Hemorrhagic Enteritis Vaccine
Hygieias hemorrhagic enteritis live virus vaccine is a lyophilizcd preparation made using a cell culture propagated avirulent strain of type 2 avian adenovirus of pheasant origin. The vaccine has been formulated to provide maximum protection with minimal or no post-vaccination side effects. It is recommended for drinking water administration in turkeys aged 5 weeks or older. The vaccine has been tested extensively for efficacy and safety both under laboratory and field conditions following USDA approved guidelines. When used as directed, it will aid in preventing clinical signs caused by virulent field strains of hemorrhagic enteritis virus.
Indications for use
This vaccine is recommended for vaccination of healthy turkeys aged 5 weeks or older by administering the vaccine orally through drinking water.
Administration
Withdraw water medication (if any) for at least 48 hours before vaccination. Do not resume any medication in the water until 24 hours after all vaccine mixed water has been consumed. Water starve the birds for about two hours prior to vaccination to induce thirst. All waterers should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Do not use disinfecting solution for cleaning since the disinfectant may kill the live virus in the vaccine. The drinking water containers and water lines must be free of any disinfectant or medications for at least 48 hours prior to vaccination and 24 hours after vaccination. In order to neutralize residual chlorine in water, use preservative free powdered milk in the water the day preceding vaccination at the rate of 1 cup per 50 gallons of water. Do not open the vaccine vials until ready to start vaccination. Use vaccine immediately after mixing with drinking water.
Tear off the aluminum seal from the vial containing the freeze dried virus and remove the rubber stopper. Use 10 ml of clean, cold non-chlorinated water for rehydration of the freeze dried vaccine. Mix the rehydrated vaccine with drinking water at the rate of 1000 doses per 10 gallons of water. Skimmed milk powder may be added to the water to act as stabilizer before mixing the vaccine. The milk powder is added at the rate of 1 cup per 50 gallons of water. Provide enough waterers so that all birds get a chance to drink the vaccine mixed water. During vaccination, do not expose the waterers to direct sunlight. Continue to provide non medicated water to the birds for at least 24 hours after the vaccine mixed water is totally consumed.
Caution
Water should be withheld long enough prior to vaccination in order to induce mild to moderate thirst in the turkeys. The water must be free of chlorine, iodine, disinfectants or other medications that could inactivate the virus thus reducing the efficacy of the vaccine. Vaccinate only healthy birds. Do not vaccinate any birds other than turkeys. Do not use any other vaccines for 1-2 weeks after administering the HEV vaccine. Vaccinated birds should not be placed on contaminated premises immediately following vaccination. All susceptible turkeys on the same premises should be vaccinated at the same time. Efforts should be made to reduce stress conditions at the time of vaccine administration.
Do not spill or splatter the vaccine. Burn containers, unused vaccine and accessories prior to disposal. Do not over dilute the vaccine or otherwise extend the dosage. Store unopened vaccine vials at 2°C-7°C {35°f^-45°F). Do not vaccinate within 21 days of slaughter or 4 weeks prior to start of lay. Contains penicillin and streptomycin as preservatives.
