Highview Power - Cryogenic Energy Storage
Air turns to liquid when cooled down to -196°C (-320ËšF), and can then be stored very efficiently in insulated, low pressure vessels. Exposure to ambient temperatures causes rapid re-gasification and a 700-fold expansion in volume, which is then used to drive a turbine and create electricity without combustion. Our patented technology draws on established processes from the turbo machinery, power generation and industrial gas sectors. We source the component parts of our technology from large and established OEMs, so there is proven lifespan and performance guarantee.

The Process
Like all energy storage systems, our cryogenic energy storage system comprises three main processes: a charging system, an energy store, and power recovery.
How it Works
Highview Power and cryogenic energy storage
Unlike chemical-based technologies, our system operates using a thermodynamic cycle that can interface with collocated thermal processes such as LNG regasification plants, peaking plants and industrial applications.
This means we can utilise waste heat and cold streams, improving the efficiency of our customers’ main processes by converting their waste thermal energy into a useful resource for our system.
Intellectual property
As the global leaders in cryogenic energy storage, we own and maintain a significant portfolio of patents covering all aspects of our proprietary technology and its control, protecting innovations relating to the process, system components and methods of operation.
The Highview Power Intellectual Property team works closely with all areas of the business to help identify inventions and fully explore their potential, and works with the patent attorneys to protect them in the most appropriate way for the business.
Storage Capacity Comparison
When deployed in optimum circumstances, a 100MW plant could store enough power to generate electricity for 100,000 homes. This is the best option for mid- to large-scale storage which can be located at the point of demand.
