VisualDx is Founded
During his first year of medical school, our founder, Art Papier, MD, attended a brown bag lunch seminar with Dr. Lawrence Weed. Dr. Papier realized the most important challenge facing medicine was having the right information at the time of decision-making. His residency brought him to Rochester, NY, the image capital of the world.

Inspired by Dr. Weed’s work in medical informatics and taking full advantage of Rochester’s deep expertise in imaging, computer innovation, and medicine, VisualDx was born.

First Release and CDC Development
VisualDx launched its first product (on CD-ROM!) in March, 2001. Soon after the September 11th terrorist attacks, VisualDx lent its knowledge and expertise to the CDC to safeguard against potential bioterrorist attacks, including smallpox and anthrax.

VisualDx Goes Mobile
With the advent of the smartphone, VisualDx becomes available on the Apple iPhone. A few years later, on the Android. This propels use of VisualDx as more and more clinicians utilize mobile technology to do their job effectively.

The Age of Interoperability
VisualDx is committed to providing the right information at the right time. That means the decision support must fit within the workflow. That workflow now includes the electronic health record. VisualDx currently supports the HL7 infobutton standard as well as SMART® on FHIR®

Expanded Decision Support
In 2001, VisualDx started with a workup for a fever and a rash. In 2016, VisualDx expanded its content to include a chief complaint seen in general medicine, doubling the number of diagnoses, adding visual elements to general medicine, and providing the best differential diagnosis tool available.

VisualDx Translated
As VisualDx expands its footprint around the world, it understood the need to have the most relevant content available. In 2017, VisualDx translated its search and guided workup to include Spanish (European and Latin American) French, German, and Chinese. Additional languages are coming soon.

VisualDx and Augmented Intelligence (AI)
VisualDx tapped into the power of machine learning and AI to identify skin lesion morphology from a picture on the phone, thus aiding the workup process. In 2017, this was realized with the add-on of DermExpert within the VisualDx product for iOS devices. This use of AI augments the physical exam and allows non-dermatologists to make better clinical decisions.

2018
AI for the Consumer
Taking the knowledge and assets gained from DermExpert, VisualDx launched its first consumer app that allows you to take a picture of a rash or skin issue, answer a few questions, and be guided to possible diagnoses and treatment options.

2020
COVID-19 Response
Drawing on its experience with public health, VisualDx took action in early 2020 by publishing expert-written, peer-reviewed content in VisualDx, including custom illustrations, to help frontline doctors diagnose and treat their patients with the novel coronavirus.

VisualDx also produced multiple tutorials and resources for both clinicians and patients that would improve the telehealth experience and raise the line of healthcare system capacity during the pandemic.

Project IMPACT
Project IMPACT (Improving Medicine’s Power to Address Care and Treatment), a global effort to reduce disparities in medicine, highlight ways to bridge gaps of knowledge, and improve healthcare outcomes for patients of color.

Since its launch, Project IMPACT has reached 1.5 million healthcare professionals and students globally and has garnered early notoriety and momentum with support from inaugural members like the Skin of Color Society (SOCS) and New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Group.

The VisualDx API
The VisualDx API enables end users to assess skin disorders from images, assisted by VisualDx’s AI, which is scientifically proven to analyze from light to dark skin images, with the same degree of accuracy.

Vaseline becomes the first major company to license the VisualDx API.

Monkeypox
Seemingly unconnected clusters of monkeypox are reported in the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Spain. Monkeypox is a rare zoonotic Orthopoxvirus infection that is clinically similar to smallpox. Look for a papular rash covering the face, trunk, and extremities that typically progresses through stages of vesiculation, pustulation, umbilication, and crusting.
