Microfluidic 3D Bioprinting Technology
Accurately recreate complex and functional physiological structures for medical research, therapeutic discovery and regenerative medicine using the Aspect Biosystem.
Cell Replacement
Treat disease by using cells to replace lost or missing function.
By bioprinting cell-loaded biomaterials, we can create encapsulated cell therapies and replace the function of lost or damaged tissue.
Our bioprinting technology offers several advantages for cell replacement, including:
- High cell viability – sensitive cells or cell aggregates undergo a gentle encapsulation process in supportive hydrogels to maintain high viability for long-term in vivo applications.
- Multifunctional cell encapsulation - biomaterials and cells are layered to combine functions such as immune protection, engraftment, and cell attachment.
- Scalability - high numbers of allogeneic cells can be encapsulated within a single 3D bioprinted implant using a scalable biomanufacturing method.
Tissue Regeneration
Promote endogenous healing by bioprinting cells and biomaterials.
By combining the power of bioprinting with the body’s own regenerative abilities, we can give the body a head start on healing and restore a normal state of function.
Our bioprinting technology empowers tissue regeneration by:
- Rapidly switching and patterning – precise placement of cells and biomaterials can guide localized actions for targeted repair.
- Using fibres as building blocks – microfluidic printheads extrude hydrogel fibres that can mimic features and structure of native tissue.
- Bioprinting multicellular structures – inclusion of supporting cells, such as stromal or endothelial cells, can enhance the ability of a bioprinted therapeutic to promote tissue regeneration.
Example: Our partners are working towards applications such as a cardiac patch to enhance repair following a heart attack or implantable vascularized tissues for kidney regeneration and other applications in regenerative medicine.
Cell-Based Delivery
Deliver and maintain functional cells in a specific location to establish long-lasting efficacy.
There is an industry recognized gap in delivering cells that maintain viability and therapeutic function.
Bioprinted therapeutics fill that gap by:
- Enabling the localization of therapeutic cells and, therefore, sustained therapeutic effect in a specific location
- Controlling the therapeutic dosage and duration of therapeutic effect
- Providing an option to retrieve the implanted cells
Example: Our work towards cell therapies for monogenic liver disorders aims to deliver engineered cells that produce the relevant therapeutic compound. Learn more here.
