NeraCare Melanoma - Serious Form of Skin Cancer
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that begins in cells known as melanocytes. While it is less common than basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma is far more dangerous because of its ability to spread to other organs more rapidly if it not treated at an early stage.

Details
Melanomas come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. That’s why it’s tricky to provide a comprehensive set of warning signs.
The four main types of melanoma are:
- Superficial spreading melanoma
- Lentigo maligna
- Acral lentiginous melanoma
- Nodular melanoma
How dangerous is melanoma?
Melanoma is usually curable when detected and treated early. Once melanoma has spread deeper into the skin or other parts of the body, it becomes more difficult to treat and can be deadly.
The estimated five-year survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early (stage I patients) is 98%. If diagnosed at a later stage, the five-year survival rate is 90% for stage II patients and 76% for stage III patients.
How common is melanoma?
While melanoma was once less common, it has been rising rapidly over the last decade.
For example: in 2013, melanoma was not even part of the 10 largest cancer groups in the USA or Central Europe. In 2018, it had developed into one of the most common cancers:
- #3 in the USA
- #5 in Australia, Germany(*) and the United Kingdom(*)
What is MELAGENIX?
MELAGENIX is a gene-expression-based assay that helps a doctor specify individual melanoma patient survival, independent of and in addition to a patient's AJCC stage.
While physicians primarily rely on AJCC staging to make treatment decisions, not all patients in a specific stage carry the same genetic risk for a potential relapse. MelaGenix provides crucial additional information to help doctors make a more personalized treatment decision.
How does MELAGENIX work?
MelaGenix is a genomic test—it looks at the activity of genes, specifically, at the activity of a group of prognostic genes in and around your tumor tissue. The activity of these genes can provide information about how your tumor might behave in the future, including how likely it is to grow and spread.
After the test, the report will provide you with a risk score between -1-4 and allocate each patient into one of two risk groups:
- A low score means the cancer has a lower chance of returning
- A high score means the cancer has a higher chance of returning
How to get MELAGENIX?
Getting MELAGENIX is easy. Tumor tissue for the test can be taken from a procedure such as a biopsy or surgery.
You will NOT need any additional surgery or procedure as the tissue is available once you have had a biopsy or surgery.
