Nuclear medicine is a specialized field of medicine using radioactive tracers (radiopharmaceuticals) that are either injected into or ingested by the patient. Specially designed cameras allow doctors to track the distribution, uptake, and excretion of these tracers and use the information to diagnose or treat diseases. If a suitable tracer is available, nuclear medicine cameras are often able to see disease earlier than other types of camera (e.g. X-ray, CT, and MRI) giving doctors the potential to find diseases such as cancer in their earliest stages.

Diagnostic nuclear medicine is a type of molecular imaging that uses very small amounts of radioisotopes attached to a targeting molecule, together called a radiopharmaceutical, to image the body.
