MedSpark -Offset Femoral Broach Handle

SHARE

Total Hip Arthroplasty (replacement) or THA is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Such joint replacement orthopedic surgery is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage such as a hip fracture. During this procedure, the femoral head is typically resected and the proximal femoral canal is broached and/or milled to accept the femoral component with attached prosthetic femoral head (ball). When broaches are utilized, they are sequentially attached to a "handle" or "impactor", inserted into the previously drilled or broached femoral canal, and impacted with a hammer until the broach reaches the proper depth.

The offset broach handle, developed by MedSpark for a medical firm in the orthopedic surgical instrument industry, was designed to operate exceedingly well for both MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) and conventional techniques. The design problems with our client`s original design which contributed to frequent breakage in the field were completely alleviated in the new design. Lost wax investment casting was chosen for manufacturing the main body of the impactor, thus allowing the MedSpark team to develop a highly weight/strength optimized design with very ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing geometry with minimal additional production cost.
