Calibration, now known as "conformity assessment", is the official testing of the accuracy of measures, weights, scales and measuring instruments in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act. Calibration is prescribed by the state and serves to protect consumers. Only scales with a type examination certificate and only OIML weights of classes E2, F1, F2 and M1 can be assessed for conformity (calibrated).

According to the EU Directive NAWI: 2014/31/EU, scales must be officially verified/conformity assessed if they are used as follows:
- In commercial transactions, when the price of a product is determined by weighing
- In the manufacture of medicinal products in pharmacies and in analyses in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories
- for official purposes
- In the production of prepackaged goods
- In medicine
Each scale is checked by a calibration officer and given a conformity mark (calibration mark). This confirms its validity within the permissible calibration tolerance. The scope of EU calibration extends to all EU member states.
