Medical Aspects of Acute Radiation Course (MAARC)
The Medical Aspects of Acute Radiation Course (MAARC) by CORE CBRN INTERNATIONAL is a comprehensive 72-hour program designed to equip operational level professionals with essential skills for managing acute radiation injuries. The course emphasizes the practical preparation and response techniques necessary for both prehospital and in-hospital settings. Participants gain in-depth knowledge about emergency and extended care for individuals exposed to radiation due to accidents or criminal acts involving radiation dispersal devices. The program integrates theoretical knowledge with interactive mockup cases, including the use of personal protective equipment. Instructors, who have extensive experience in radiation incident management, guide the participants through the process, ensuring they understand best practices suitable for their specific organizational needs. This course is open to personnel from civilian and military hospitals, safety and security officers, and other specialists, with no prerequisites required. It is conducted in English at the client's location or at the HiddingenTestCenter in Germany.
Aim
The aim of the Medical Aspects of Acute Radiation Course is to provide practical knowledge to prepare and respond to patients who are injured by acute radiation. This can be the result of an accident but also the intended criminal use of radiation dispersal of exposure devices.

- Basic knowledge of radiation and radiation dispersal/exposure devices
- Extensive knowledge about the medical aspects of radiation: deterministic and stochastic effects, as well as Acute Radiation Syndrome
- The organization of the emergency radiation patiënt care
- Triage
- Pre-hospital emergency care of radiation injured
- Preparation for and transport
- Preparing the emergency department or aidpost for receiving radioactive contaminated patients
- Setting up a patient decontamination area
- Patient decontamination
- Wound management
- Proactive Sepsis management
- Bio dosimetry
- Decontamination of essential medical equipment/vehicles
- Participants gain skills involving prehospital and/or in-hospital management of a radiation injured patient and ARS
- Participants identify stakeholders and key organizations involving radiation as needed
- Participants gain knowledge about key-elements in containing of a possible contamination with radioactive particles
- Participants gain knowledge about the forensic aspects of patient care in case of a intended criminal act.
Methodology
In this course we will provide operational level professionals with proven knowledge about the preparation and response regarding prehospital and in-hospital radiation medical management. This theoretical foundation will then be integrated in mockup cases, where participants learn how to respond to a radiation patient including the use of ppe. Participants will gain sufficient knowledge about the emergency and extended care of radiation induced injury and sickness. The training will be peppered with interactive cases. All instructors have hands on experience with radiation and have a extensive theoretical background in emergency management of radiation incidents or patient management.
