CareStart™ G6PD

Rapid screening test for G6PD (Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency in human blood

Intended Use
The CareStart™ G6PD Test is a rapid in vitro qualitative detection test for G6PD enzyme activity in human blood samples. This visual screening assay diagnoses insufficient G6PD activity levels and is intended to aid in the identification of individuals who are G6PD deficient.

Summary
G6PD deficiency is the most common enzyme deficient disease in humans. It is a metabolic enzyme, of which deficiency may result in hemolytic anemia when individuals with the disorder are under oxidative stress caused by drugs, food, or other substances.
Diagnosis of G6PD deficiency is important for the treatment of diseases and illness because many drugs like anti-malaria drugs, sulfa drugs and ascorbic acid produce reactive oxidative species that may cause acute hemolytic anemia in G6PD deficient patients. Therefore, it is highly recommended to test for G6PD deficiency in patients, especially malaria patients, prior to starting treatment with oxidative drugs to prevent acute hemolytic anemia.

The CareStart™ G6PD Test is composed of a strip impregnated with a G6PD substrate. The assay is a colorization test based on a formazan formation using a tetrazolium compound. A normal G6PD whole blood sample produces a purple color in the reading window as it migrates along the strip. in contrast, a G6PD deficient whole blood sample shows no color.
