Plasma pre-treatment before varnishing

SHARE
For the plasma treatment of metals before spray painting, we use the piezobrush® PZ3 with the Nearfield module - for conductive materials.
To ensure a reproducible process, the countdown function is selected with a treatment time of 10 seconds.
Afterwards, an aluminium and a stainless steel sample are each treated with cold atmospheric pressure plasma on half of their surface.
The aim of the surface pre-treatment is to clean the substrates from contaminations that are invisible to the human eye. This surface pre-treatment by means of plasma is intended to improve the adhesion of paints and varnishes on surfaces and thus the quality of the coating and varnishing can be increased.
The cross cut test evaluates the adhesion of coatings to the surface
This involves using a special grid-cutting knife to cut a crosshatch pattern into the coating. It is important that all cuts go down to the substrate and scratch it without damaging it too much.

Then a pressure-sensitive tape is stuck on parallel to one direction of the cuts and then removed rapidly at an angle of 60°and the grid is inspected and evaluated according to its condition.
The cross-cut test shows a clear difference between the plasma-treated and the untreated surface.
While on the untreated substrate area entire parts of the coating peel off, only the grid cuts are visible on the plasma pre-treated area. The result shows that plasma treatment of aluminium and stainless steel produces a uniform and flawless paint finish, without the use of environmentally harmful chemical primers.
