Tablo: Empowering dialysis patients with in-center self-care - Video
The Tablo Hemodialysis System by Outset Medical empowers dialysis patients to take control of their own care. In-Center Self-Care is when you manage part of your dialysis treatment under the supervision of clinic staff.
Tablo is easy to use, with 3D animations and step-by-step
instructions that walk you through dialysis treatments. It's also easy to learn through Tablo Go, a touchscreen learning tool that teaches you how to use Tablo with quizzes and games. Most patients learn in less than 4 hours.
Patients who manage their own care may have better outcomes including fewer hospital admissions, fewer missed treatments, and lower chance of death (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21905528).

TRANSCRIPT
PATIENT: Typical morning is like hit the Tablo and just start from there and follow directions and are ready to go.
PROVIDER: When I first heard about the Tablo coming to us, I was a little hesitant because I was worried about what if they don't do it right? Is it not going to work? Once we see the patients setting up their machines, it works.
PATIENT: It took me about three or four times to, you know, learn it. By the fourth time it was able to set up the machine without even reading it because I knew what came next. I found learning and setting it up very easy. Tablo was very easy to work with and no problems to think about five to seven days.
PROVIDER: It's self-explanatory and it gives you a step by step process of what to do. We really were kind of hands off and it kind of makes you uncomfortable at first, but when you step back and realize that it is the patient that's going to be driving the treatment, it's perfect. They come into the clinic, they have confidence in setting up their machines, and if they just feel like they have more control over their disease compared to if they just come in and have the nurses do all the work, I feel like we're giving them their independence back. We can kind of give them the tools and see what they can do with it.
PATIENT: Using a Tablo has given me more independence, and I am an independent person. I feel proud of myself. I can do it myself.
