Solutions for PAT Test - Medical / Health Care - Medical Monitoring
The PAT test allows the antioxidant power of the blood to be determined. As the antioxidant power of the blood is the first defence against the development of an oxidative stress condition, it is particularly useful to determine this.
A substance with antioxidant capacity is defined chemically as a molecule with reducing properties. Reducing properties are not an absolute but a relative characteristic, so the choice of reference molecule becomes important.
If this molecule is too oxidising, the antioxidant power of the blood will be overestimated because molecules which under physiological conditions do not usually have antioxidant power will also react. On the contrary, choosing an oxidant that is too mild will lead to an underestimation for the opposite reason. It was considered appropriate to choose ferric ion as the reference molecule because it is present under physiological conditions and therefore a test based on it provides a realistic estimate of antioxidant power.
The PAT test is a photometric test that can be used in outpatient, research and pharmacy settings on a dedicated system (FRAS 5 or FRAS BRAVO) or in any laboratory equipped with a photometer.
The test is performed on only 10 µl of heparinized plasma or serum in one minute. The results of the PAT test are expressed in U.Cor (1 U.Cor is equivalent to the signal developed by a 1.4 µmol/l ascorbic acid solution). The PAT Test can be performed alone or in combination with the d-ROMs FAST Test in the REDOX OB FAST kit.
