We harness a pain inhibition mechanism known as Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM). This is the notion that in certain diseases, including migraine, patients have dysfunctional pain processing; a harmless stimulus is perceived by the brain as noxious and the patients experience pain. CPM may be triggered by delivering a remote non-painful but well-felt peripheral stimulus. Once triggered, CPM results with increased release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain stem that are capable of shutting down the pain.
