The TracPatch Story
Approximately four years ago, some of the senior management were sitting on a plane waiting to take off when one asked the others, “What can we do to differentiate ourselves from the large orthopedic players? What can we leverage internally?” They began to examine each member of the senior management team and came to realize that not only did they have a deep understanding of the orthopedic industry as a whole, but each member had either worked for, or founded, an electronics or medical electronic company in their history.
The direction was set that they would develop something with embedded circuits, but what? Fast forward a few months, while sitting at a picnic table at a summer BBQ for a friend’s birthday, one of the senior executives was chatting with an orthopedic surgeon who was also there. He asked the surgeon friend, “What are some of the challenges you face in your practice with postoperative total knee patients.” The orthopedic surgeon responded, “My biggest concern is that when the patient is discharged from the hospital, I have no idea what they are doing until there is a problem.” That is how the TracPatch idea was born.
With the use of smartphone technology and Internet of Things, TracPatch monitors key patient metrics allowing a surgeon to remotely monitor a patient’s recovery. After extensive research, development, and testing, TracPatch was soon launched, much to the excitement of the orthopedic industry. Consensus strongly believes in the power of connection between health care providers, patients, and industry.
